Joining other states in the movement to house seniors in more home-like living arrangements, California bill SB 1228 has been approved by the California State Senate Health Committee. Establishing a new licensing category for a new nursing home model known as the Green House Project, the bill would create a new licensing category for a skilled nursing facility in small, more home-like facilities with 10 or fewer residents. Facilities can be either standalone or consist of more than one home.

The bill, which would become effective January 1, 2012, now goes to the California Senate Appropriation Committee.
