Brain-healthy recipes focus of contest

Brain-healthy ingredients will be front and center when the Emeritus Senior Living announces the winner of its “World’s Smartest Recipe Contest” May 30.

Entries of recipes that include one or more brain-healthy ingredients—such as salmon, sardines, crab, berries, walnuts, broccoli, curry, avocados, spinach, brown rice, chickpeas or buckwheat—are being accepted until May 16 on the Emeritus Facebook page. Five finalist recipes will be selected May 21 and then prepared and featured on social media. The winning recipe will be announced May 30.

Entries will be judged on their brain-healthiness, taste and originality.

The winner will receive a 30-minute phone session with clinical neuropsychologist Paul Nussbaum, PhD, adjunct professor of neurological surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, national director of brain health for Emeritus and author of Save Your Brain. The winner also will receive a $200 gift card to a culinary store.

“Nutritional neurosciences research increasingly supports the value of food in the structure and function of the human brain,” Nussbaum says. “This recipe competition illustrates that brain-healthy food can be delicious and that there are steps people can take right now to help their cognitive fitness.”
