November 11 is Veterans Day. Many vets are your residents and this holiday presents the perfect opportunity to honor them. From a recognition luncheon to special programming, opportunities abound for you and your staff to make this a special day.

In 2004, I reported how Deer Park Retirement Community in Philadelphia went the extra mile to make the celebration a meaningful daylong event complete with speakers, color guard, a band, and local dignitaries in attendance along with family and friends. Every veteran received special recognition—including staff members—who have served the country.

However, as these veterans continue to grow old and require more complex care, many are faced with the stress and worry of affording the services they need in a long-term care setting. In the upcoming November issue of Long-Term Living, Jeff DeBevec of Belmont Village Senior Living will show how you can help these unique residents access benefits to ease their financial strain. From little-known Veterans Administration benefits to establishing a senior living line of credit, there are vehicles available that can assist you in finding the right solution for eligible residents.

Plan something special for your vets—because they are something special. Please share your ideas or tell us how you creatively themed an activity or event to link with the holiday.
